So, You Want To Purchase Used ConveyorsIf you're thinking of purchasing belt conveyor systems, used conveyors will be what you're looking for if you're a small company. There's really no good reason to purchase new conveyors, as used conveyors can be lubricated and cleaned to make them good-as-new before being put into operation. Make sure that any ball-bearings are lubricated with the suggested lubrication.
Incline conveyor in particular, might need lubrication because of the added torque they get because they lift weight at an angle. Vector forces are more strain to a conveyor system than a flat conveyor might be. Because they oftentimes are used past their service date without being lubricated, you should replace any ball-bearings that have been worn to the point that they are pitted or gouged. Roll each roller, if they have them, to determine that it rolls easily. If there is any binding, replace the bearings. Lubricate all other bearings and you should have a conveyor system that's good-as-new afterwards.
Before you purchase used conveyors, try to look at each conveyer belt. Rotate each belt through a whole cycle to ensure that there are no broken or bent links. Listen for any places where it might be squeaking, as that will indicate how much in need of lubrication the system is. If you can purchase used conveyors, look for hytrol conveyors as they will stand up over time, well. If they're pneumatic conveyors, make sure you hitch them up to a proper source to test them out before purchasing. If those selling the system don't allow you to do such things, I'd question the quality of the equipment. There's always the possibility, when purchasing used conveyors, that they need more service than money might warrant. If you need to put together a material conveyor system, think through what you'll need by using a CAD program or Photoshop to assemble properly-sized mockups so that you can see what it would look like and how many you'll need before you actually purchase the conveyor belts. If you can you should purchase conveyors all from the same manufacturer so they will match up easier. Remember that conveyor systems made by different manufacturers might not work properly, together, with each other. Since you don't know what used conveyors were used for, make sure that you clean them thoroughly. If they are made of stainless steel, this will be an easy thing to do. If they're made of steel, make sure that you dry them down after you've washed them. Look for nicks and cuts which may injure potential workers. You don't need health issues arising from your purchase. File any sharp edges or replace any broken links before putting the conveyors into use. |
